Jimmy Horner made it 21-0 after a 51-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Horner later left the game with a knee injury and did not return.
The Rockets defense allowed only one big play: A 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jason Russell to Dawone Johnson in the fourth quarter.
“We knew that they were faster and probably more athletic than us,” Minzey said. “We had to be fundamentally sound, everyone do their jobs and we’d be just fine. The linebackers did great. The D-line did great. Our corners were locked down all game.”
The three offensive fumbles were a concern for DePorter. He knows the Rockets need to clean it up before a matchup with a Raby team whose only loss came to 9-0 Phillips, the top-ranked team in Class 5A.
“I don’t know what it is,” DePorter said. “I know we drill it, we practice it, we emphasize it, we preach it. And right now it’s just something that’s hurting us.”
But the Rockets did enough to overcome the miscues. Junior running back Mike Kaufman led R-B with 116 rushing yards on 22 carries.
“We prepared really well at practice for this game,” Kaufman said. “We watched a lot of film and knew our jobs coming in. We were blocking great and I was able to find the holes.”
