Man airlifted following late night fire in Marengo home

Marengo police pulled man from building before firefighters arrived

MARENGO – First responders rescued a man from a burning home Monday night. He was airlifted from the scene.

Police, fire and rescue crews from Marengo responded about 10:15 p.m. Monday to the 700 block of East Grant Highway (Highway 20) in Marengo for a report of a structure fire, according to a news release from the Marengo Police Department.

Three police officers who reached the residence first pulled a man from the burning home, Marengo Fire Lt. Noel Gaines said. The man was in critical condition when Flight for Life transported him to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

When firefighters arrived, they noticed smoke coming from one side of the home and extinguished the flames inside the building.

“[The damage] was not so significant where the whole building was lost,” Gaines said. “It’s likely in the $10,000 to $20,000 range.”

The Marengo Fire Department is investigating the fire’s cause. Highway 20 was closed for a short time during the emergency response but reopened early Tuesday.

Firefighters from Harvard, Genoa, Hampshire, Woodstock and Union also responded to assist Marengo crews.
