To the Editor:
Once again, the Republican Party is proving who they really are. That is, bought and paid for puppets and shills for corporate America and the
1 percent. The party’s Tax Cut and Jobs Act throws an average $98-a-month bone to some middle-class families (while eliminating many deductions) in exchange for $1.5 trillion in deficit exploding tax cuts to corporate America and the wealthiest families (with no elimination of loopholes). This at a time when corporate America is enjoying record high profits (see stock market), paying record low taxes (2016 nominal rate of Fortune 1000 was
18.6 percent) while paying stagnant wages (relevant to inflation and productivity), combined with legalized tax evasion by stashing $2.4 trillion in overseas tax havens, and they have no sympathy from middle-class America.
If anything, we should go back to the tax rates of arguably the last legitimately elected Republican and last true conservative, Dwight Eisenhower, who built the Interstate Highway System and the strongest middle class, all while paying off World War II debt with a 90 percent rate on income over $1.7 million today. If anything, we should be eliminating tax evasion loopholes, return to progressive taxation and fund $3 trillion in backlogged infrastructure. This will really create millions of high-paying engineering and construction jobs.
What happened to fiscal conservatives howling at the moon about the national debt when Barack Obama was in the White House? Legalized bribery corrupted them all. Our future requires that we vote them all out. Let’s start with Randy Hultgren and Peter Roskam.
