WOODSTOCK – McHenry County Democrats are hosting an event to raise money for victims of Hurricane Maria on Tuesday in Woodstock.
“Democrats of McHenry County Care about the Caribbean” will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Stage Left Café, 125 W. Van Buren St., Woodstock, according to a news release from the Democratic Party of McHenry County.
The event will raise money for relief and rebuilding efforts in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, both recently devastated by Hurricane Maria.
“This event is a way for people in our community to support the many residents of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands whose lives have been affected by one of the worst hurricane disasters in history,” Vice Chairwoman of the McHenry County Democratic Party Kristina Zahorik said in the news release. “All donations will benefit United for Puerto Rico and the Fund for the Virgin Islands.”
The event will feature live music, refreshments and a cash bar. A $10 minimum donation is suggested.
Democratic candidates planning to attend include 14th U.S. Congressional District candidates Matt Brolley and George Weber; 6th U.S. Congressional District candidates Grace Haaf, Ryan Huffman and Becky Anderson; and Illinois State Senate candidate Mary Mahady.
Nancy Herrera, a Wauconda teacher, will speak about her personal experiences delivering food, toiletries and other donations provided by her students and their families in Puerto Rico.
“We hope to see a good turnout because the need is so great,” Zahorik said. “We are fortunate that our own community has never experienced a catastrophe of this magnitude. This is a way for us to make a difference in the lives of people who really need all the help we can give.”
