Crystal Lake Central co-op senior Valerie Tarazi secured her spot at next weekend's state meet with a pair of sectional titles Saturday at the St. Charles North Sectional.
The Auburn commit won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:04.30, beating St. Charles North's Mallory Jump by 1.04 seconds. Tarazi also captured the title in the 100 breaststroke. She swam the event in 1:03.16 to narrowly beat St. Charles East's Mary Jania (1:03.85).
Jacobs freshman Jennifer Tokarz also qualified for next weekend's state meet, which will take place Friday and Saturday at New Trier, after finishing third in the 500 freestyle (5:05.47).
Central co-op freshman Makayla Nietzel also advanced in four events for athletes with disabilities. Nietzel finished first in the 50 freestyle (26.38), 100 freestyle (57.49), 200 freestyle (2:05.29) and 100 breaststroke (1:21.90).
Jacobs finished fifth as a team with 123 points, Central was seventh with 98 points, and Huntley was eighth with 56 points. Dundee-Crown finished 12th out of 13 teams with 14 points. St. Charles North won the team title with 302 points.
Vernon Hills Sectional: At Vernon Hills, McHenry placed sixth out of nine teams with 89 points, but the Warriors were unable to advance any swimmers out of the sectional.
Host Vernon Hills won the team title with 303 points, well ahead of Gurnee Warren's 244 points. Woodstock co-op finished ninth with three points.
Barrington Sectional: At Barrington, Cary-Grove finished 10th out of 13 teams. The Trojans finished with 38 points and didn't have anyone advance to next weekend's state meet. Host Barrington edged Stevenson for the team title.
