To the Editor:
When those responsible carry guns, they hold the power to protect those around them; nevertheless, when vicious hands abuse guns, they may end the lives of those around them. To this day, the Second Amendment guarantees Americans the “right … to keep and bear arms.”
Constitutional freedoms apply to those who follow the law. For this reason, those who’ve inflicted pain or shattered the law in the past cannot buy guns to cause harm in the future.
In 2014, federal background checks prevented 3 million unfit hands from grabbing ahold of guns. Despite this, background checks struggle to prevent the wrong people from using dangerous weapons because private sellers may sell the qualified or the unqualified firing weapons.
Nineteen out of 50 states closed this private sales exemption loophole, but a shoe left untied slips off. If 31 states remain unlinked to the background-checking system, then little will prevent malicious beings from obtaining hazardous devices.
