Letter: School District 155 Board shouldn't raise taxes with declining enrollment

To the Editor:

Warning: Crystal Lake homes abandoned. Yes, that is exactly what we are facing with the combination of the proposed Community High School District 155 tax increase on top of the proposed federal income tax attack on homeowners.

Homes in my neighborhood are being sold for half of their original price or their cost to rebuild. Why? Neither present homeowners or potential buyers are willing to pay our crushing property tax bills.

The perfect storm of reduced home values, out-of-control high property taxes and now the Republican tax proposals to reduce or eliminate deductions for both property taxes and interest on home loans is a crippling blow for homeowners. Local government services and real estate-related business soon will be negatively affected.

Why in the world would the District 155 Board even think about a tax hike at this time, with school enrollment in decline?

Attend the school board’s next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1 S. Virginia Road and voice your opinion.
