To the Editor:
In his letter of Nov. 15, Mr. Daleiden argues that there is no reason for the general public to possess “assault-type” firearms similar to those used to commit some of the horrendous murders that have occurred lately.
He casts the blame for those slayings on the NRA’s defense of America’s gun rights. Unfortunately, Mr. Daleiden and others who demonize the NRA are dangerously naive. It is true, the NRA’s main mission is to prevent any weakening of the Second Amendment to our Constitution. For good reason; the right of the citizens of our country to keep and bear arms is the very cornerstone of our democracy. That right is our final protection against an oppressive government that could do away with all of our freedoms.
Anyone with even a limited knowledge of history, or current world events, must realize that as horrible as our latest mass murders have been, they pale in comparison with what has occurred under totalitarian governments throughout time. Just look to the Nazi atrocities, the Communist purge of Russia, and China, Mugabe’s Africa or North Korea. Don’t think it can’t happen here. It will if we do not have the tools with which to protect ourselves from a government wishing to enslave us. To allow the evil deeds of a few demented individuals be the reason for all of us to lose our last and best tools for protection is pure and utter folly! Blind faith in government is a true fool’s paradise, and a very real danger. Especially if we give up our very last line of defense.
So, go get yourself an “assault-type” firearm, Mr. Daleiden. You may be called on to protect yourself, your family and your country from a government that has decided it knows what is best for us, in spite of us.
We grow closer to that every day.
