High school boys basketball roundup: McHenry defeats Hononegah; Prairie Ridge tops Geneva

Gavin Markgraff scored 16 points to lead the McHenry boys basketball team to a 42-40 win over Hononegah on Wednesday at the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

Maki Mohr had eight points, making 3 of 4 free throws in the final 13.9 seconds, and had a steal as time expired for the Warriors (1-1), giving coach Chris Madson the first win of his career.

“Mohr is by far the best on-ball defender we have,” Madson said. “We have a tight, cohesive team whose motto this season is ‘Battle.’

“You saw that in the final few minutes today. Battle is exactly what these guys did.”

Patrick Breisch added eight points for McHenry (1-1), and Gio Calabrese had six.

Prairie Ridge 63, Geneva 56: At the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving Tournament, Jack Hoyland and Connor Kazin both scored 21 points for the Wolves (1-1) in the win. Prairie Ridge hit seven 3s in the victory, getting three from Joseph Hansen (11 points), two from Hoyland and one apiece from Kazin and Hunter Morlock.

Also at the tournament, the Wolves fell to Hononegah, 65-45. That game was postponed Monday because of a power outage at Prairie Ridge and resumed Wednesday.

Huntley 68, Belvidere North 58: At the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving Tournament, Cory Knipp scored 15 points for the Red Raiders in a victory. Zack Loveisky added 12 points, Brett Bigden had 11 and Ryan Sroka had 10. Loveisky and Davis Pasco (eight points) both made a pair of 3s for Huntley (1-1).

Hampshire 59, Sycamore 38: At the Strombom Tournament in Sycamore, Collin Woods had 13 points to lead the Whip-Purs past the Spartans for their first win of the season. Nate Cork added 10 points and three 3s for Hampshire (1-1), AJ Bishop had seven points and a 3, and JD Shaw, Drew Dalby and Jon Westerlund had six points apiece.

Dundee-Crown 59, Rochelle 47: At the Strombom Tournament, Gabe Bergeron led the Chargers (1-1) with 15 points in a win over the Hubs. Jordan Hairston had 12 points, Brad Stec had 11 points, and Jack Orndahl had eight points and two 3s.

D-C will play Genoa-Kingston at 3 p.m. Friday, and Hampshire will play Sandwich at 4:30 p.m.

Marian Central 70, Woodstock 61: At the Hoops for Healing Tournament in Woodstock, Michael Hucek had 18 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, for the Hurricanes (3-0) in a victory over the Blue Streaks. Jakub Baranski added 16 points and three 3s for Marian, and Jon Preston had 13.

Evan Bridges and Andrew Adams both had 19 points for the Blue Streaks (0-3). Bridges made five 3s, and Adams had four. Michael Gardner added 11 points and Carl Anderson Jr. had nine.

Cary-Grove 75, Round Lake 54: At the Hoops for Healing Tournament in Woodstock, Ben Ferrell scored 17 points to lead the Trojans (3-0) to their third straight victory. Addison West added 13 points for C-G, and David Aulert had nine points.

Antioch 56, Woodstock North 45: At the Hoops for Healing Tournament in Woodstock, Ryan Schaffter had 13 points and three 3s in the loss for the Thunder. Braeden Given and Gauge Gavers each added seven points for North (0-3).
