First Fox Valley Conference championship. First IHSA regional title.
The Red Raiders return four state qualifiers from last year’s team and hope to add to those firsts with a few seconds in 2017-18.
“As long as the weights shake out this year, I don’t see any reason why we can’t do as well, if not better than we did last year,” sophomore David Ferrante said.
Ferrante finished fourth at the Class 3A state finals at 152 pounds. He will wrestle at 160 during his sophomore campaign and is coming off a summer in which he earned a third-place finish at 160 in the USA Wrestling Junior and Cadet National tournament in Fargo, North Dakota.
“That was pretty surreal, I got to wrestle on the big stage in the semifinals at Fargo,” Ferrante said. “That’s the most prominent national high school wrestling tournament. That’s one of those thing that you’re never going to forget.”
It’s no secret what Ferrante is aiming for in his high school season, which began last week.
“In terms of this year, definitely top of the podium is the goal,” Ferrante said. “First place.”
