2017 Northwest Herald Boys Soccer Player of the Year: Jacobs' Noah Melick

Jacobs forward Noah Melick and his teammates had a tough act to follow after winning the Fox Valley Conference and their second sectional title in school history last season.

The FVC championship escaped Jacobs’ grasp, as District 300 rival Dundee-Crown took that. But the Golden Eagles played some of their best soccer in the postseason and again won a Class 4A sectional.

Melick, who will play at Wisconsin next year, again was a star with 33 goals and 19 assists. He also was the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year.

Melick repeats as the Northwest Herald Boys Soccer Player of the Year, selected by the sports staff with input from area coaches. Northwest Herald senior sports writer Joe Stevenson asked Melick questions about his favorite players, superheroes and goal celebrations.

What actor would play you in a movie about your life?

Melick: Ryan Reynolds because he is married to Blake Lively, and who wouldn’t want to be married to her?

Is there a significance to you wearing No. 6?

Melick: My childhood crush was my sister’s best friend, and she wore No. 6 her whole life.

Who is your favorite superhero?

Melick: Thor because of his strength, but most importantly, because of the hair.

If you were playing at the park and could pick any players from history for your team, who would be some of your teammates?

Melick: Some of my teammates would be [Christian] Pulisic, [Adebayo] Akinfenwa, Ronaldhino and Thierry Henry.

Who’s the most famous person you have taken a picture with?

Melick: Dick Vitale.

What goes through your mind when you go in the air and you know there is going to be contact with an opponent?

Melick: Honestly, I’m just looking at the ball and not really paying attention to the other guy. If I go up and contest it, I’m either winning the ball or giving the other guy a hard time to win it.

What’s the worst injury you ever suffered on the field?

Melick: I got concussed once in Iowa. It kept me out about a month.

Do you know the words to “On Wisconsin”?

Melick: I do not know the words, but I will learn them very shortly.

Which one of your teammates makes you laugh?

Melick: Dan Buirge, cause he’s a funny guy and makes the stupidest comments.

What is one game this season that sticks out in your memory?

Melick: One game that sticks out is the sectional final against Streamwood. We were tied, 0-0, going into penalty kicks, and we both went 5 for 5, so it went into sudden death. I remember coach [A.J.] Cappello asking Dan [Buirge] if he wanted to go in the goal and make a save, and Dan didn’t even hesitate. He went in to play keeper and saved the shot for the win. It was just a crazy experience, and I was so happy for a guy I’ve known my whole life.

If you played baseball, what would be your walk-up music?

Melick: “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers.

What is the best book you recently read?

Melick: “Hamlet” in English class.

What would you change about soccer?

Melick: I wouldn’t punish people for celebrations.

What is one of your biggest pet peeves?

Melick: When people tell me how to drive.

What professional sports team has the best uniform?

Melick: The Oakland Raiders.

Where’s your favorite place to get pizza and what do you get on it?

Melick: Sal’s Pizza, I get bacon and pepperoni.

Do you have any pregame rituals?

Melick: I put my shin guards on after warm-ups, right before the game starts. And I don’t tie my right shoe until the game starts.

What is something you are not good at, but you wish you could do well?

Melick: Probably singing or dancing. I’m not good at either, but I still do it because I think I’m good, but others think the opposite.

What is your favorite video game?

Melick: FIFA.

If you could do anything, what would be your best goal celebration?

Melick: I’d break out into the Electric Slide.
