Crystal Lake South senior Jack Becker took up this season right where he left off as a junior, which was dominating the area.
Becker did not get beat in a race until the Class 2A Burlington Central Regional, when he fell to Kaneland’s Matt Richtman, who will be his teammate next year at Bradley. Becker lost to Sterling’s Jacob Gebhardt and Richtman the next week at the Kaneland Sectional, then lost to Richtman and Gebhardt to finish third overall in the Class 2A boys race at the IHSA Cross Country State Meet in Peoria.
The only other time he did not get first was Sept. 30 at Antioch’s Pat Harland Invitational when he was leading the race by a sizable margin with 800 meters to go and went the wrong way. He and a few other runners were disqualified.
Becker repeats as the Northwest Herald Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, selected by the sports staff with input from area coaches. Northwest Herald senior sports writer Joe Stevenson hit Becker, for the second year in a row, with some questions.
