Burlington Central, Johnsburg, Harvard, Richmond-Burton and Marengo left the Big Northern Conference prior to the 2016-17 school year to form the seven-member Kishwaukee River Conference along with former FVC schools Woodstock and Woodstock North.
The KRC is currently in its second season of competition, but voted 5-1 in June to remove Burlington Central from the conference beginning in the 2019-20 school year.
Richmond-Burton athletic director Pat Elder cited Burlington Central's enrollment projections as the reason behind the decision shortly after the June vote. Only Johnsburg voted in favor of BC's retention.
“(Burlington) could be somewhere between 1,300 and 1,500 kids,” Elder said. “At that point, you’re talking about a school that would be (almost) three times bigger than some schools in our league. People at Burlington are great people, we’ve had a great relationship with them over the years.
"But when some people in our league’s projections are what they are and our projections are what they are, you have to do what you think’s best for everybody involved.”
