Letter: Cheers to Woodstock for helping homeless

To the Editor:

I commend the Northwest Herald and reporter Brittany Keeperman for the “Closer Look” report on the city of Woodstock’s efforts to aid the homeless. (“ ‘No place for people to go’,” page 3, Dec. 4.)

I also commend the city and Mayor Brian Sager in particular for opening the Old Firehouse Assistance Center, and to the volunteers who help the homeless.

I was pleased to learn that our city is truly offering valuable assistance under Director Sue Rose. Woodstock City Attorney Ruth Schlossberg’s respect for the civil rights of the homeless was heartening.

We live two blocks from the center and have never heard of anyone in our neighborhood having been harassed by the homeless near the center or on the Square. In that respect, to conflate reaction to several incidents into communitywide concern about the management of the center is an overstatement.

Again, thanks to the Herald for the article and everyone involved in keeping the center open. It’s an expression of our “better selves.”
