To the Editor:
Thanks to the many generous donors in McHenry and Kane counties, McHenry County Libertarians collected just less than $750 worth of diapers and cash donations for The Diaper Bank of Northern Illinois.
The Diaper Bank of Northern Illinois is a 100 percent volunteer organization funded entirely by donations from individuals, businesses, groups, churches and organizations. In 2016, it distributed more than 300,000 diapers to babies, the disabled and elderly, and is on track to do so again this year.
I was astonished to learn from the Rev. Phyllis Mueller, director of The Diaper Bank, that adult diapers are in such demand, when an adult diaper donation comes in to The Diaper Bank, it usually is delivered to someone in need within 24 hours.
The volunteers at The Diaper Bank of Northern Illinois know that “diapers are not a luxury, they are a necessity.”
A healthy change of diapers costs $100 a month or more for all ages. An infant uses up to 12 diapers a day; a toddler uses eight diapers a day. Parents who cannot afford $100 a month in disposable diapers for child-care centers often leave the workforce.
Many disabled babies never outgrow the need for diapers. Healthy but incontinent seniors often become homebound if they cannot afford diapers.
The Diaper Bank of Northern Illinois can buy diapers at lower cost – about 50 cents an adult diaper.
Every dollar you donate goes toward the purchase of diapers, the storage of diapers or the delivery of diapers.
