55-year-old bicyclist killed in Fox Lake crash

FOX LAKE – A 55-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike on Route 12 in Fox Lake, officials said.

The crash happened at 7:44 a.m. near Riverside Island Drive, according to a news release from the Fox Lake Police Department.

Police are withholding the man’s identity until family is notified, according to the release.

The driver, a 46-year-old woman, was going south on Route 12 when she struck a man riding his bike in the center median, according to the release.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Parts of Route 12 that closed immediately after the crash reopened about 1:30 p.m., according to an alert from the police department.

Police had sent an alert earlier in the day advising drivers to avoid Route 12 between Oak and State Park roads. The crash caused traffic backups and detours, officials said.

Representatives from the department were not available to provide details, including whether the driver of the vehicle was cited.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office, Fox Lake Police Department and Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County continue to investigate the crash.
