High school girls basketball roundup: Marian Central tops Waukegan at Grant Holiday Tournament

Marian Central exploded for 21 points in the first quarter Tuesday against Waukegan en route to a 56-43 victory at the Grant Holiday Tournament.

Vannessa Garrelts scored seven of her game-high 17 points in the opening quarter. Amber Reynolds added 12 points, Janelle Allen scored nine points, and Regan Dineen had eight points.

The Hurricanes (9-6) play Mundelein at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Hononegah 46, Hampshire 32: At the Charger-Komaromy Christmas Classic in Carpentersville, Kelby Bannerman scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds in an opening-round loss for the Whip-Purs, who trailed by as many as 17 points.

Ally Cermak added 10 points on the strength of two 3-pointers. Hampshire (5-9) plays South Elgin, which lost to New Trier, 68-40, in its tournament opener, at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Trinity 45, Dundee-Crown 30: At the Charger-Komaromy Christmas Classic in Carpentersville, the host Chargers were unable to muster much offense in a first-round tournament loss.

Gianine Boado provided D-C with 10 points and seven rebounds, and Katelyn Skibinski also had 10 points.

The Chargers shot just 8 of 35 from the field and will play at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
