High school boys basketball roundup: McHenry's Markgraff passes 1,000 career points in win; Richmond-Burton advances to E.C. Nichols semifinals

McHenry's Gavin Markgraff tossed in 20 points and surpassed 1,000 career points in a 67-56 win against Riverside-Brookfield Wednesday in a first-round consolation bracket at the York Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament in Elmhurst.

Markgraff's big game included four 3-pointers. He now has 1,009 points in his three-year varsity career. Patrick Breisch was second on McHenry (7-3) with 16 points, while Maki Mohr had 12 for the Warriors.

“Gio (Calabrese) was an absolute warrior for us on offense and defense,” McHenry coach Chris Madson said.

The Warriors face Stagg at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Richmond-Burton 54, Rochelle 47: At the E.C. Nichols Tournament in Marengo, Jeff Jankowski scored 15 points to lead the Rockets (6-4) in a quarterfinal win over the Hubs.

The teams were tied, 35-35, at the end of three. Shane Byrne added 12 points for R-B, Luke Uhwat tossed in 10 points and Devin Bailey added eight points and a 3 in the win.

The Rockets will face Crystal Lake Central in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday. Marengo plays Harvest Christian at 7:30 p.m. in the second semifinal.

Geneseo 71, Woodstock 67: At the E.C. Nichols Tournament in Marengo, Evan Bridges tossed in 22 points and made five 3s for the Blue Streaks in a consolation bracket loss to the Maple Leafs.

Andrew Adams had 20 points and four 3s for Woodstock, and Michael Gardner had 11 points and a pair of 3s. The Streaks (4-6) next face North Boone at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Sycamore 58, Woodstock North 46: At the E.C. Nichols Tournament in Marengo, Ryan Schaffter tallied 10 points and made two 3s for the Thunder in a consolation bracket loss.

Mat Fallaw also had 10 points, making all six of his free throws, Joey Haynes chipped in eight points, and Zach White added seven. The Thunder (1-7) next play Round Lake at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Dixon 47, Marian Central 33: At the Jacobs Hinkle Holiday Classic in Algonquin, Beau Bailey scored 15 points to lead the Dukes past the Hurricanes in a Consolation A game. 

Jakub Baranski led Marian with 10 points. The Hurricanes (6-6) will play Prairie Ridge at noon Thursday in the Consolation A third-place game.  

Jefferson 58, Prairie Ridge 30: At the Jacobs Hinkle Holiday Classic in Algonquin, the J-Hawks held Prairie Ridge to nine points in the first half and advanced to the Consolation A championship game.

Terry Ford led Jefferson with 14 points, while Quillin Dixon and My'Quion Garrett pitched in 13 apiece. Connor Kazin led the Wolves (4-9) with 13 points.  

Johnsburg 72, Cary-Grove 70 (OT): At the Jacobs Hinkle Holiday Classic in Algonquin, Jackson LaMarche tallied 19 points and sparked a second-half comeback for Johnsburg with his first dunk as the Skyhawks beat the Trojans.

Mason Sobiesk and Zach Toussaint each scored 16 points for Johnsburg (6-5), and LaMarche, Sobiesk and Toussaint all had two 3-pointers each.

C-G built a 19-point lead in the third quarter, but could not hold off the Skyhawks, who outscored the Trojans, 21-10, in the fourth. Frank Jakubicek led the Trojans with 16 points, Beau Frericks scored 12, and Addison West added 11.  

Johnsburg will meet Grant for the Consolation B championship at 3 p.m. Thursday. C-G faces Addison Trail at 10:30 a.m. in the Consolation B third-place game.

Buffalo Grove 60, Dundee-Crown 46: At the Wildcat Hardwood Classic in Wheeling, Jack Orndahl had 14 points with two steals and two 3 to lead the Chargers (7-3) in an opening round loss to the Bison. Brad Stec added 10 points and Gabe Bergeron had nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Buffalo Grove outscored D-C, 33-16, in the second half. The Chargers next play Vernon Hills at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Ridgewood 51, Hampshire 50: At the Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic in DeKalb, the Whip-Purs suffered a close loss to Ridgewood in their tournament opener.

Colin Woods led Hampshire (2-7) with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals while Justin Anderson added 11 points, five rebounds and two steals. J.D. Shaw had nine points, seven rebounds and two steals, and Nathan Cork added seven points.

The Whips play Marmion Academy at 9 a.m. Thursday in the consolation bracket.

DeKalb 59, Huntley 50: At the Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic in DeKalb, the Red Raiders (1-8) lost their tournament opener to the host Barbs. Cory Knipp led Huntley with 13 points and three 3s, Uchenna Egekeze had nine points, and Ryan Sroka had eight points and six rebounds.

The Raiders next play Belvidere North at 1:45 p.m. Thursday in the consolation bracket.

Harvard 51, Faith Lutheran 38: At the Alden-Hebron Christmas Tournament in Hebron, Andrew Cooke scored a game-high 16 points for the Hornets in the tournament-opening win over the Saints.

Gavin Perkins added 10 points for Harvard (3-7) and Pablo Peralta had eight. For Faith (0-7), Josh Rolnicki had 11 points, Gideon Schauer had 10, Bjorn Held added eight, and Tyler Oman had seven.

Durand 55, Alden-Hebron 48: At the Alden-Hebron Christmas Tournament in Hebron, Brad Judson tallied 20 points for the Giants (2-8) in a tournament-opening loss. Mason Mindham added 13 points for A-H, which next plays Harvard at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
