1 injured after fire at abandoned Woodstock gas station

WOODSTOCK – A person was hospitalized after a fire broke out Thursday morning at an abandoned gas station in Woodstock.

Woodstock firefighters responded about 10 a.m. Thursday to the 800 block of Lake Avenue in Woodstock for a reported fire, Fire Capt. Karen Bush said.

Bush said dark smoke was visible from the small building upon their arrival, but crews were able to extinguish the flames within about five minutes. The fire appeared to be in the station’s bathroom.

“It appears that a homeless person had started a fire in there to keep warm,” Bush said.

A person was taken to Centegra Hospital – Huntley and is in good condition.

Woodstock police are conducting an investigation into the fire’s cause.

Bush said she did not have a cost estimate of the damage.

Woodstock police could not be reached for comment on the cause of the fire or whether charges will be filed.
