Athlete of the Week
Vannessa Garrelts, Marian Central, sr., PG
Garrelts scored 36 points in a pair of Hurricanes' wins at the Grant Holiday Tournament to start the week. The two wins moved Marian to 10-6 on the season, matching last season's win total.
The Miami (Ohio) commit tossed in 17 points in a victory over Waukegan, 56-43, on Tuesday, and scored a team-leading 19 with a pair of 3s in a 56-41 win over Mundelein on Wednesday.
Marian's all-time leading scorer now has 1,315 career points and is averaging 18.6 points a game for the Hurricanes.
Tough act: McHenry's Liz Alsot surpassed 1,000 career points earlier this season, and now is closing in on another milestone: 1,000 career rebounds. The 6-foot senior forward entered the week needing 84 rebounds to hit the mark.
Alsot can rack up rebounds in a hurry, as she displayed with a 27-point, 21-rebound performance against Crystal Lake Central in a 53-50 win at the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic championship.
She also had a game with 23 rebounds earlier in the season.
Alsot was one of two area players to average a double-double last year at 13 points and 11.7 rebounds a game. Going into this week, she was averaging 17.7 points and 13.1 rebounds a game for the FVC-leading Warriors.
“She’s the toughest kid I’ve ever seen,” McHenry coach Rob Niemic said.
Freshman impact: Hampshire freshman Kelby Bannerman has had a huge impact for the Whip-Purs and is averaging 10.3 points a game year – also regularly leading Hampshire in rebounding.
Bannerman, a 6-foot-1 freshman guard, has scored in double figures in four straight games for the Whips (6-9). She's not reached double digits just five times in 15 games.
