JOHNSBURG – A woman was sent to the hospital after barricading herself Monday morning in her Johnsburg home and threatening to shoot herself.

Heavy police presence closed down the 2000 block of Grandview Drive for several hours as officials assessed the situation in below-freezing temperatures on New Year’s Day.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched about 8:15 a.m. for a wellness check at the home, Deputy Sandra Rogers said.

A 27-year-old woman was the only person home when police arrived, Rogers said.

“Deputies arrived on scene, and they were able to have a conversation through a closed door with the female,” Rogers said. “She refused to open the door.”

The McHenry County Sheriff’s multijurisdictional SWAT team was called for assistance.

“She did threaten to harm herself with a firearm, but no firearm was located in the house,” Rogers said.

After deputies made contact with the woman, she was sent to Centegra Hospital – Woodstock, Rogers said. No one was injured in the incident.

Police began clearing the scene about 1 p.m., Rogers said.

Connor Denny watched the situation from his home across the street. Police cars flooded the street during the morning before an armored Humvee and SWAT truck drove up, he said.

Although Denny said he didn’t know the occupants of the home well, he said, “They have been good neighbors.”

Although Rogers would not go into detail about why the woman was in distress, she said the sheriff’s office often receives calls from residents asking for well-being checks around the holidays.
