Lakewood police: Car likely experienced mechanical failure before crashing on frozen pond

LAKEWOOD – A car went over an embankment onto an iced-over pond Tuesday.

Lakewood police and the Crystal Lake Fire/Rescue District responded about 3:15 p.m. to the area of Lakewood and Ackman roads.

A northbound vehicle had been approaching the intersection and tried to make a right turn when the car likely experienced mechanical failure, Police Chief Mike Roth said.

“We are assuming the brakes went out at this point,” Roth said. “He continued to go over the hill and onto the pond.”

The driver was not injured, and the car did not break through the ice.

No one had been cited Tuesday evening. The incident is under investigation.
