McHenry man faces felony sex abuse charges

LAKE IN THE HILLS – A McHenry man appeared in court Wednesday on felony sex abuse charges after police said he inappropriately touched a child.

According to a six-count complaint filed in McHenry County court, 58-year-old James J. Barnard abused someone younger than 13 on Nov. 1 and 28.

Lake in the Hills police, who filed the complaint Jan. 19, could not be reached for details about the man’s arrest or their investigation.

Barnard, of the 1800 block of Kerry Lane, is charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and domestic battery. If he were to be convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Barnard could be sentenced to three to seven years in prison.

He remains out on bail in the meantime after a family member posted $2,000 on his behalf Saturday.

Defense attorney Hank Sugden said Barnard suffers from a traumatic brain injury, but he said it was too early in the case to comment further.

A hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 26.

This is Barnard’s first criminal charge in McHenry County.
