Wonder Lake house fire causes $35,000 in damage

All but one animal accounted for

WONDER LAKE – A family was displaced Thursday morning after their home caught fire.

Firefighters from the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District arrived about 4 a.m. to the home in the 6900 block of Hiawatha Drive.

Smoke was coming from the attic, and the basement was on fire, Deputy Fire Chief Mike Weber said.

The homeowners already were outside, but they were working to get pets out of the home.

All animals were accounted for except one cat, Weber said. No one was injured.

With the help of mutual aid from Richmond, Spring Grove, Hebron-Alden-Greenwood, McHenry and Woodstock fire crews, the fire was under control within 10 minutes.

The home was left with $35,000 to $40,000 in damage, Weber said.

Investigators remained at the scene Thursday to try to determine the cause of the fire. Weber said it might have started near the laundry room.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family.
