Letters to the Editor

Letter: Trump is petulant, childish

To the Editor:

The president’s recent petulant and childish tweets are an embarrassment to not only U.S. citizens but also denigrate our world reputation as a rational society that treats each other with dignity and respect which, of course, is on the wane ever since the advent of negative campaign ads.

On Sunday, Jan. 21, the president tweeted, “The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked.”

As a committed independent voter ever since my days of working for the Independent Voters of Illinois back when I was in graduate school at the University of Chicago, I know quite a few Democrats and I’ve never met a single one who wants “illegal immigrants to pour into the country.” In fact, they do not want even one single illegal immigrant to enter the country. The tweet is inflammatory and certainly does add or help the conversation on immigration reform.

On Saturday, Jan. 20, the president tweeted, “Democrats are holding our Military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration. Can’t let that happen!”

The vice president repeated the same mantra to our troops in Jordan, “Despite bipartisan support for a budget resolution, a minority in the Senate has decided to play politics with military pay, but you deserve better.”

Not true. Three democratic senators, led by Claire McCaskill of Missouri, proposed in separate resolutions to exempt military pay from the government shutdown. Google “Senator McConnell Objects to Military Pay Protection” to learn which party was “…holding our military hostage …” and “… play politics with military pay …” in an attempt to blame the Democrats in the public sphere. Was it successful? I ask you. Did you know, dear reader, three Democratic senators tried to get military pay exempted from the shutdown but were blocked by the Republican Senate majority leader?
