High school boys swimming: Cary-Grove co-op sends two relays to state

Woodstock North co-op freshman Quinn Cynor qualifies in 100 butterfly and 500 free

LINCOLNSHIRE – Cary-Grove co-op's Kolin Fadden found another gear Saturday at the Stevenson Boys Swimming Sectional.

"Kolin is definitely a guy who knows how to gear it up and perform when the time is right," C-G coach Scott Lattyak said. "He really threw down in the (200-yard) medley (relay) and 200 free relay. Unbelievable swimmer. He has a lot of spirit. A lot of the guys love swimming with him."

Fadden, a junior at Cary-Grove, anchored the 200 medley relay and posted a personal-best split of 21 seconds to lead the Trojans to next weekend's state swimming meet at Evanston Township High School.

He then anchored C-G's 200 free relay, posting a 20.3 split, leading that relay to state. The 200 medley relay placed fourth with a time of 1:37.09, and the 200 free relay was second in 1:27.22.

The 200 medley relay of Fadden, Noah Siegmeier (Prairie Ridge), Hunter Jackson (Prairie Ridge) and Peyton Richardson (Prairie Ridge) just beat the state qualifying time of 1:37.29.

"It was very close," Fadden said. "I was just thinking, 'I've got to do it for my team.' We felt confident, we knew what we had to do, and we worked up all season for that."

The Trojans' 200 free relay of Omid Babakhani (Crystal Lake Central), Cameron Castro (Crystal Lake South), Connor Dolezal (C-G) and Fadden again cut it close to the state-qualifying time of 1:27.71.

"It was a really good race," Castro said. "We knew that was our best shot at qualifying. To get it back to state, it's really awesome. It means a lot to us that we can keep sending our relays."

C-G also qualified the 200 free relay last season. Dolezal, a senior, was not on that relay with 2017 Northwest Herald Boys Swimmer of the Year Ethan Hare filling that spot for the Trojans.

"It's huge for Omid and Connor," Lattyak said. "It's a farewell swim. I know something that they really wanted this year was to get Connor to state, because he missed it last year. He gets his state swim, finally."

Dolezal said he is looking forward to one more meet with his close buddies.

"I think it's awesome," Dolezal said. "I've been swimming with these guys and practicing with them the entire year, just getting hyped up for these relays. I looked at Omid and said, 'This isn't going to be our last high school meet.' I'm super excited to go to state, super happy we made it."

The Trojans had a chance to send all three relays to state, but missed on the final event, the 400 free relay. Dolezal, Babakhani, Castro and Fadden took second with a time of 3:13.41. The state-qualifying time is 3:12.86.

Babakhani said the Trojans want to top last year's state meet, when they didn't advance to the finals.

"We're looking at a final this year," Babakhani said. "Last year, we were pretty close and came up short. We're looking to get on that podium, hopefully."

Woodstock North co-op's Quinn Cynor was the only individual qualifier of among area swimmers. The Woodstock freshman finished third in the 100 butterfly (52.24) and runner-up in the 500 free (4:38.71), advancing in both.

Last week at the Fox Valley Conference Invitational, Cynor swam under the state-qualifying times in the both 100 fly and 200 IM. He chose to compete in the 500 free Friday instead of the 200 IM.

His 500 time easily broke the program record, Woodstock North co-op coach Ian Shanahan said.

"The 500 was up in the air," Shanahan said. "We knew he would do the butterfly. I wanted him to do the IM, but he did awesome. He had his heart set on the 500. It was a huge drop and he set the school record. He's a big club swimmer. He's had a lot of success doing longer distances."

Cynor said he was training for the 500 throughout the season, so he wanted to stick with that.

"Those two extra swims are just going to be great next week," Cynor said. "It feels great to get them. I want to thank my coach, my teammates, and especially my parents for everything they have done this season. Hopefully this goes to my teammates, motivates them to keep working hard, and hopefully we can do more in the future."

Jacobs co-op's Harold Ogaban (Hampshire) was fourth in the 100 backstroke (53.38), six one-hundredths off the state time (53.32), and fifth in the 200 IM (1:59.66).

Richardson was fourth in the 200 IM (1:57.93), missing the state-qualifying time of 1:57.77.

Jacobs co-op's Elijah Stuart was sixth in the 50 free (22.04), missing the state time of 21.86. Siegmeier was fifth in the backstroke (53.79). Jackson finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.02). Jacobs co-op's Vince Chiappetta (Jacobs) was sixth in the 500 free (4:51.96).

Jacobs co-op didn't send anyone to state, but tallied more points (142) than Cary-Grove co-op (132.5) in the final team results. Jacobs ended C-G's streak of 10 consecutive FVC Invite titles last week.
