Letters to the Editor

Letter: Defend the unborn like your own

To the Editor:

This is an open letter to Sen. Tammy Duckworth.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, Sen. Duckworth. From what I’ve read, it appears you have gone out of the (usual) way to conceive a baby. I’m happy that medical science has provided this opportunity for you to expand your family.

A precious little person is snuggled deep inside your womb, safe, well-cared for and already loved. You already know that this little person is a daughter.

She has a mother and a father who are financially able to provide for her. You might even already have a name chosen for her.

You would probably defend this little person from harm with all the vigor and strength that you brought to defending our country so admirably as a military helicopter pilot. You would defend her although she is not yet born.

You do not want her to be hurt.

But, Sen. Duckworth, how disappointing it is to learn that you will not defend from harm the little girl in the womb of a not so well-positioned mother. Daughters, and sons, whose mothers have been abandoned by their husbands or boyfriends; daughters, and sons, whose mothers see a child as an inconvenience, an impediment to her ambitions, or one child too many for her family; these children you do not defend.

Are these children worthy of harm because they are not wanted by biological mothers? (They are wanted; there are waiting lists of parents who would willingly, lovingly take every “unwanted” baby heading toward the abortion clinic.)

Sen. Duckworth, when you voted “nay” to Micah’s Law, you did not represent faithfully the 74 percent of pro-lifers, 56 percent of pro-choicers, 57 percent of Hispanics, 70 percent of African-Americans and 78 percent of Millennials who support the passage of Micah’s Law, which will ban abortion after 20 weeks, the point at which medical science says pre-born babies can feel pain.

Your “nay” vote kept the United States in company with China and North Korea as only seven countries that permit elective abortion after 20 weeks.

What a shameful legacy you are writing for your daughters.
