Please join us in honoring nurses throughout our community
If you ask nurses how they chose our profession, quite often you’ll hear, “I always knew I’d be a nurse,” or “I wanted a career where I make a difference.” Every nurse’s personal story is different, but the best nurses have one theme in common: They are passionate about giving every patient the personal, exceptional care they deserve.
The Northwest Herald’s decision to honor nurses as Everyday Heroes reflects the stories we experience every day. Nursing gives us a front-and-center role in some of life’s most magical moments. We marvel during lifesaving heart surgeries, and rejoice when families welcome new babies. We laugh with visitors whose jokes are irresistible, and celebrate when an exhausted patient settles into deep, relaxed sleep.
And although we feel called to be professional nurses, each of us also experiences moments that test that calling. We set aside our own heartbreak as we comfort patients with terminal illnesses. We feel a flash of fear when a confused patient becomes angry or violent. We head home to our families and hope we still have more to give.
That is when our training is put to the test. Professional nursing requires as much grit as compassion. It requires character and commitment to being better every day. Our nursing community operates as a team because we know each of us is absolutely capable as an individual. That creates a bond that is hard to break.
For professional nurses, “a job well done” can mean many things – helping a patient maintain dignity in a difficult moment, teaching a spouse how to administer medications, watching a family drive away with a patient who will fully recover. Our patients honor us with their trust, and it’s a privilege we hold dearly.
Please join us in honoring nurses throughout our community. They are Everyday Heroes to patients, to medical staff, to each other and to the families and loved ones who selflessly share them with us every day.
