School bus with children onboard catches fire in McHenry

The bus is totaled

McHENRY – A school bus with children onboard caught fire Friday afternoon.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded to a report of a vehicle fire shortly after 12:30 p.m. Friday near Murphy Drive and Dundalk Lane in McHenry. When first responders arrived, half of the bus was on fire, said Battalion Chief Dave Harwood.

“The bus driver said she was driving and started to have mechanical issues,” Harwood said. “She pulled over and noticed smoke coming from the engine area. She tried to extinguish it but wasn’t successful.”

No one was injured during the incident. It took the department about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and Murphy Drive was closed to traffic between Cashel Lane and Dundalk Lane for about 45 minutes, he said.

The bus – which McHenry School District 15 and McHenry High School District 156 share – is totaled but a damage estimate hasn’t yet been determined. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

School officials weren't immediately available for comment.
