Endorsement: McHenry County clerk: Joe Tirio

When Joe Tirio was elected as McHenry County Recorder, he vowed to get a referendum on the ballot to remove that office and consolidate it with the McHenry County Clerk.

This March, that is set to happen.

Tirio is running to be the Republican nominee to take over that clerk position while current clerk, Mary McClellan, is running for a circuit judge position.

Tirio believes the consolidation of the two offices is simple math: when one of the positions is eliminated, taxpayers save.

Tirio hopes to work to integrate many of the services of both offices while responsibly moving the county clerk’s office forward in terms of technology.

When we endorsed Tirio for recorder in 2016, we did it with the promise that he would get a consolidation measure on the ballot in 2018.

He has followed through, and we believe Tirio to be a transparent advocate for saving taxpayers money by reducing unnecessary layers of government.

Janice Dalton is Tirio’s Republican opponent. She is a former city of McHenry clerk, who held that office from 2001 to 2017, when she said that she chose not to run for the office again. She currently works as a legal assistant, a job she has worked in for 40 years.

On the same day she filed to run for the clerk position, Dalton also filed for bankruptcy – a month after her husband accused her of misappropriating more than $30,000 from his annuity fund.

Dalton’s Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy filing lists $10,000 in video gambling losses and $30,000 in money she withdrew in her husband’s name from his annuity fund.

When asked by Northwest Herald reporter Ed Komenda, Dalton said on the annuity fund issue: “That’s between my husband and I, and that’s personal.”

We continue to have faith in Tirio’s plan.

Tirio is endorsed.
