To the Editor:
The Crystal Lake High School District 155 Board’s decision to close Haber Oaks Campus in Cary and move it to Crystal Lake South is a regrettable mistake, with the best interests of both groups of students being compromised.
The board takes the position that “change is hard” but they are not paying attention to the fact that many students IEP’ed for anxiety or depressive disorders are being asked to endure more than they can potentially handle.
The kids’ needs should come first. We are setting kids up for bullying and failure. Dropout rates are bound to increase and perhaps then the board will reconsider their choice.
That change will come too late, however, for the children whose lives will be irrevocably changed for the worse. I am saddened that a group of board members, elected by the people, now refuse to listen to the people.
The fiscal irresponsibility, as well, is staggering. We thought nothing of spending millions on the bleachers and the legal battle to keep them, but we are now motivated to close Haber to save $70,000 a year?
Where do the District 155 board’s priorities lie?
