Letter: That cartoon shouldn't have been printed

To the Editor:

I am writing in regard to the incredibly offensive “cartoon” in the Northwest Herald.

I understand that the Opinions page should represent a broad spectrum of ideas across a variety of ideologies.

A good political cartoon should give us pause, make us think, and, hopefully, view things from a different perspective.

What the Herald chose to print, however, provided nothing more than a degrading depiction of individuals who are among the most vulnerable in society, fueling a negative and wildly inaccurate stereotype of those who live in poverty.

I am talking about families, single mothers and children – many of whom rely upon government programs such as SNAP in order to live.

I am sure you have numerous options when choosing what goes on the Opinions page.

And while you have the “right” to print a cartoon such as this one, you also have a responsibility to not promote hate and bias against those least able to defend themselves against it.

You may try to justify your choice to publish that “cartoon,” but I find it inexcusable and irresponsible and I am very disappointed in your decision to do so.
