Man in pickup truck tried to grab 13-year-old girl Saturday, police say

WONDER LAKE – Police are looking for a suspect in connection with an attempted kidnapping Saturday, when a man reportedly tried to abduct a 13-year-old girl near Wonder Lake.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded at 6 p.m. Saturday to the area of Hancock Drive and East Wonder Lake Drive for an attempted child abduction, according to a news release from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office sent Monday.

The girl told police that she was walking east on Hancock Drive when a dark-colored pickup truck pulled up beside her. The driver asked whether she had a lighter and held up a pack of cigarettes, according to the release.

When the girl continued to walk, the man got out of his truck and tried to grab her, the release stated. She escaped his grasp, and he drove away traveling east on Hancock Drive.

Police said the man was described as about 30 years old with facial hair.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information can contact the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office at 815-338-2144, McHenry County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-762-7867 or the tipline at tipline@co.mchenry.il.us.
