CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks has made his pick for Illinois governor: J.B. Pritzker.
During a 45-minute meeting Friday with the Northwest Herald editorial board, the Democratic candidate for governor sat next to the first popularly elected Democratic County Board chairman on a campaign trail stop in McHenry County.
Franks eventually weighed in on Pritzker’s campaign and why he thinks he’s the man for the job.
“I’ve known J.B. for a long time,” Franks said. “It’s his values and his heart that puts him aside.”
Pritzker is a guy Franks goes to for advice, he said.
“He’s counseled me,” Franks said. “When it was time for the same-sex marriage vote, he called me up and said, ‘You know what, you could be in the legislature for 20 years, but who cares if you don’t do the right thing at the right time.’ ”
Politically, voting for same-sex marriage equality was not the right thing to do, Franks said.
“He helped focus me on what should be done,” Franks said. “I voted for it. It’s one of the proudest moments of my life.”
Franks applauded Pritzker’s people skills and characterized the candidate as someone who brings people together in a collaborative way.
“We need someone who can bring folks together,” Franks said. “I think he’s the one guy who can fix our state.”
