Letters to the Editor

Letter: On weapons and rights

To the Editor:

“A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state.” ... How many of the defenders of semi-automatic weapons even are aware or care that this is the way the Second Amendment of our Constitution begins?

The founders did not want a large standing army, but we have one of the largest and most powerful armies in the world.

Semi-automatic weapons have one purpose and one purpose only, and that is to kill as many people in the shortest amount of time as possible. And when it happens in Las Vegas or Parkland, let’s have Paul Ryan and the other lackeys of the NRA announce that “now is not the time to talk about gun control.”

When was the last, or the first, time that we heard that someone warded off an intruder in his home with one of these weapons? I’m still waiting.

So keep your rifle for legal hunting, keep your handgun at home locked up and well-secured so that your 3-year-old does not find it and kill himself or his sister or his mother, but unless you’re going out to train with your militia unit, get rid of your AR-15.

But the hope for America’s future apparently lies with the youth of today. In Florida, teenagers are marching to protest the slaughter of their fellow students and their teachers.

Let’s encourage young people across the country to organize and protest. Get out there, kids, and let ’em know what you need.
