Hours are reduced at a Lake in the Hills gym after a 51-year-old man drove his vehicle through the front entrance Saturday.
The vehicle crashed into the front doors of Anytime Fitness, 9521 Ackman Road, about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, manager Cody Stevens said. No one was hurt.
The driver was trying to park but accelerated instead of braking, Lake in the Hills police communications coordinator Ashley Eccles said. He was not cited.
Stevens said no staff members were in the building at the time of the crash, but a few members were inside working out.
“All I can go off of is camera footage, and I saw everyone stopped what they were doing, made sure the driver was OK, and then continued to work out,” Stevens said. “We had a big gaping hole in the middle of the building, but we still had people working out and dedicated to their routine.”
Anytime Fitness allows members to come in 24/7 through the gym’s front-door security system and key pad. However, because the front door with the system was destroyed in the crash, members cannot scan in during hours that are not staffed.
The gym has expanded staffing hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Stevens said he hopes the doors and security system are fixed by the end of the week.
“This definitely isn’t something you prepare for on a day-to-day basis,” Stevens said.
