Prairie Ridge is releasing its boys and girls varsity basketball coaches, pending Community High School District 155 Board approval at Tuesday night’s meeting, according to the agenda.
Additionally, Tim Taege is set to be named varsity girls basketball coach, pending board approval.
Boys basketball coach Corky Card and girls basketball coach Rick Lima will be dismissed from their coaching duties. Both already were scheduled to be released as physical education teachers after the school year as part of eight layoffs that the board approved in March.
Lima faces felony financial exploitation charges and pleaded not guilty March 23 to stealing more than $50,000 of an elderly woman’s money to purchase a home. Lima's next court date is May 4.
Lima was arrested Jan. 30 and did not coach the remainder of the girls basketball season, although he has remained an active employee at the school. Lima had been the girls basketball coach at Prairie Ridge since January 2016. Sophomore coach Brett Collins served as interim varsity coach in Lima’s absence at the end of this season.
Taege, the new girls basketball coach, previously served as the freshman boys basketball coach, according to the Wolves boys basketball website.
Athletic director Mark Gilbert could not be reached for comment on Taege’s hiring.
Also pending board approval, Steve Karlblom will serve as a girls basketball assistant coach next year. Karlblom coached the varsity boys basketball team from 1997 to 2002.
As for the boys basketball program, Card has been varsity coach since the 2002-03 season, when he took over for Karlblom. Card’s teams went 260-201 during that span, winning five regional titles and one sectional title.
Card’s teaching position was almost cut a year ago. An outpouring of former players spoke up on Card’s behalf at a board meeting in March 2017. He eventually was retained for the 2017-18 school year.
No replacement for Card’s position as varsity boys basketball coach is listed on the school board agenda.
Change for Central tennis: Crystal Lake Central girls and boys tennis coach Sam Sweeney is resigning after the school year, pending District 155 board approval Tuesday. This year was Sweeney’s first year coaching the Tigers.
Sweeney, a 2006 Prairie Ridge graduate, has had a highly successful tennis career himself, winning the McHenry County Classic Men’s Open eight times.
