The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook Sunday for McHenry County that included freezing rain and snow.
A wintry mix of icy rain hit the Interstate 88 corridor and along the Illinois-Wisconsin state line Sunday morning. Residents were warned of a possible encounter with periods of sleet.
The mix became snow by the afternoon. Meteorologists said most areas were expected to see less than a half-inch of snow.
Areas south of the I-88 corridor saw rain turn to snow later Sunday afternoon and throughout the night, according to the service.
National Weather Service meteorologist Amy Seeley said northern Illinois residents could encounter some snow Monday morning, followed by an icy rain in the afternoon.
Tuesday's forecast is mostly dry, Seeley said, with a small chance of rain.
