Letter: Norge's first Olympic ski jumper

To the Editor:

Congratulations again to our Norge Olympic Ski Jumpers, Casey Larson, Mike Glasder, Kevin Bickner. Honors also to A. J. Brown (2018) and their coach Scott Smith (1988), who have almost qualified for the Olympics. They have all brought excitement to the sport and honor to Norge Ski Club in Fox River Grove.

However, there is another ski jumper whose achievements have been lost in the mists of time.  I am sure he is smiling down upon them and praising them, also.

His name is Harry Lien. Harry was born May 15, 1896 in Norway and emigrated to the United States in 1914, and then served in the U.S. Army during World War 1.

He began ski jumping in Norway, and won numerous ski jumping championships in the United States. He was elected to the United States Ski Association’s Hall of Fame. Harry died in Park Ridge on Sept. 19, 1978 at age 77.

What has been forgotten about Harry Lien?

Harry Lien was one of a team of five participating in the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France and was a member of the Norge Ski Club. Our first Olympic competitor.

The Fox River Grove Memorial Library has notebooks on the history of the ski club, including programs for most of the years. Norge Ski Club booklet “25th Anniversary Review” and the Internet were sources for the above information.
