Girls track and field: Marian Central shares 2A sectional title

WOODSTOCK – Marian Central did not let one misstep spoil an otherwise splendid Class 2A Woodstock North Girls Track and Field Sectional.

Sure, the Hurricanes were disappointed about their disqualification in the 4x200-meter relay, but they did their best to make up for it later.

By taking second in the final race, the 4x400 relay, Marian tied Carmel for the team title with 78 points and got three more girls out of Friday's meet to next week’s state meet.

Marian had not won a girls track and field sectional since 2000. Eve Meintz, Dominique Thomas and Regan Dineen all qualified in three events for the Hurricanes, who qualified seven athletes in seven events.

Marengo took fourth as a team with sophomores Lillie Simons and Bailey Bertrand both grabbing two wins. Simons won the 200 and the triple jump, and also qualified in the long jump. Bertrand won the shot put and discus.

Woodstock’s Kylie Hagmann, a two-time All-Stater in cross country, won the 3,200 and will have a chance to repeat as a medalist in that race.

Marian’s 4x200 team of Meintz, Molly Iden, Meaghan Di Pietro and Thomas finished first, but was disqualified when Meintz’s handoff to Iden was just outside the exchange zone.

“It was a little harder than usual,” said Meintz, who tied for sixth in the 2A high jump last year. “My coach and I decided to focus on qualifying for state (in the high jump and pole vault) and focus on the running events, and then do my best when we get to state.”

Meintz, Meaghan Di Pietro, Dineen and Thomas won the 4x100. Thomas, a freshman, also won the 100 and was second in the 200.

“The meet went pretty well as a freshman,” Thomas said. “Our 4x100 did really good with our exchanges. In the 100, I needed a good start and I got that.”

The Hurricanes’ 4x400 team of Kelly Reagan, Iden, Amelia Awe and Dineen came from behind in the final 50 meters to take second place and get Reagan, Iden and Awe to state with the others.

Simons qualified in the 100 as a freshman, but made it in three individual events this time. She hit the 17-1 state-qualifying distance in the long jump on her first jump. Dineen, Simons and Galena’s Paige Christopher all hit 17-1; Dineen got first, Christopher was second and Simons third on the tiebreaker of next-best jumps.

“I tried to use (the conditions) as an advantage," Simons said. "It’s easier to think positive about how you’re going to jump in poor weather than thinking you’re not going to do well. I just used the wind to my advantage.”

Bertrand was safely qualified heading into her final shot put throw in second place, but she threw 36-4 to pass Boylan’s Erin Bishop by 3 inches.

“It meant a lot (to win),” Bertrand said. “When she threw that it pushed me a lot to keep throwing farther. That felt amazing.”
