Boys track and field: Marengo's Schirmer, Woodstock North's Grover qualify for state in 4 events

RICHMOND – Marengo’s Finn Schirmer and Freeport’s Deion McShane staged two of the best races anyone could imagine.

McShane edged out Schirmer by one-hundredth of a second in the 110-meter high hurdles. Schirmer returned the favor in the 200, winning in three-hundredths.

Still, Schirmer’s favorite race in Wednesday’s Class 2A Richmond-Burton Boys Track and Field Sectional Meet was the 4x400 relay, the final event. Schirmer passed Woodstock North’s Aiden Filetti to win by two-hundredths of a second, with both teams advancing to the IHSA Boys State Meet next Friday and Saturday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.

“I raced against some amazing athletes,” Schirmer said. “It was awesome to race against (McShane). He is a very good athlete and he had some really good races today. Tonight was just awesome. The 4x4 was the best race in my opinion.”

That win was Schirmer’s fourth qualification and the third for Blaine Borhart, but it meant that Jadon Kozin and Alex Leonard also were going to state.

Woodstock’s North’s runner-up 4x400 race made the Thunder’s Joe Grover a qualifier in four events (110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles, 4x200 and 4x400).

“We PR’d (personal records) in the relays and me personally in every single event today,” Grover said. “That’s what’s getting me to state, improvement in every single meet.”

Thunder sophomore Elijah Pena was second in the triple jump and ran with Grover, Colin Zinn and Keith Webb to win the 4x200. Grover, Filetti, Austin Zieman and Luke Duenas made it in the 4x400.

“It was definitely our best race,” Pena said. “We broke our school record, our handoffs were really smooth. We kind of gut-checked it and pulled it together.”

Marengo’s Aaron Shepard cleared a personal-best 6-7 to win the high jump. Shepard made 6-3, then moved to 6-6 and 6-7. Shepard barely rested more than a minute before hitting 6-7 on his first attempt.

Marengo’s Anthony Dixon won the shot put. Richmond-Burton’s Reed Marshall and Kevin Powers both qualified in the triple jump, where Marshall is making a third trip to state. Marian Central’s Ryan Jones (3,200) and Zach Taylor (long jump) were other qualifiers.

“I was feeling really fresh and thought, ‘If there’s a time to do it, it’d be now,’ ” Shepard said. “I went for it and it worked out. I felt pretty good today, and I jump well at Richmond.”

Grover, Borhart and Freeport’s Jaden Johnson made it on time in the 110 highs, while Johnson and Borhart qualified on time in the 300 intermediates.

McShane swept two hurdles races that produced nine state qualifiers, which included a win over Grover in the 300.

“I knew from the beginning Deion was going to be here and I said, ‘If I can stick with him, I know I’m going to state,’ ” said Grover, who was second in the 300s. “That’s what everyone else and I tried to do. That got us there. He got us all there.”
