A crash Wednesday morning in unincorporated Richmond killed a Vernon Hills man and injured a Woodstock man, officials said.
The Richmond Township Fire Protection District, Wonder Lake Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded about 7 a.m. to a two-vehicle crash in the area of Tryon Grove and Keystone roads.
A preliminary investigation showed that a Chevrolet Suburban driven by a 32-year-old Woodstock man was traveling east on Tryon Grove Road west of Keystone Road when it collided with a Toyota Prius, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
The driver of the Prius, 77-year-old Eduard Modilevsky of Vernon Hills, stopped at a stop sign, but then for unknown reasons pulled out in front of the Suburban, police said.
The Suburban did not have a stop sign.
Modilevsky was pronounced dead at 7:16 a.m., and an autopsy revealed that he died from blunt trauma to the chest, according to a news release from the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
The Woodstock man was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry with minor injuries, police said.
Air bags deployed in the Prius but not in the Suburban, police said.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the coroner’s office.
