Girls track and field: Marian's Meintz, Marengo's Bertrand advance at Class 2A state meet

CHARLESTON – Marian Central senior Eve Meintz displayed an air of calmness in her third trip to the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Meet.

Hurricanes coach Andrea Radcliffe could see it in Meintz’s walk as she was escorted from the Class 2A pole vault to run in the 4x100-meter relay.

“She walked around the track with confidence and maturity, something she didn’t have the last couple of years,” Radcliffe said. “You could see her walk across the field and like, ‘OK, I’m going to do the 4x1. OK, I’m heading back to the pole vault.’ ”

That confidence showed in Meintz’s performances. She did not miss on a high jump or pole vault attempt Friday at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium in qualifying for Saturday’s finals in both events.

Meintz and Marengo sophomore Bailey Bertrand, who advanced in the discus, were the only area Class 2A competitors to advance. Woodstock’s Kylie Hagmann and Richmond-Burton’s Jane Wisniewski will run in the second heat of the 3,200 meters, which is run only on Saturday.

Meintz made the high jump finals as a sophomore and tied for sixth at 5-3 last year. She also led off the Hurricanes’ 4x100 team with Meaghan Di Pietro, Regan Dineen and Dominque Thomas. Meintz made 5-2 to qualify in high jump and 11-0 in the pole vault.

“It all went pretty well,” Meintz said. “I felt really good about all of my jumps. I didn’t have to take too many jumps. I’m going to try to (get a personal best) tomorrow, so around 5-4 and try to do the best I can.”

Meintz had no problems with a new 135-pound-rated pole in the vault.

“I saw her go over 11-0 and I said, ‘You have tons of space, so stick with that pole.’ ” Radcliffe said. “Now she’ll have a clean slate to start all over and do the same thing.”

Bertrand was disappointed with her throw in the shot put, but thrilled to be in seventh place (112-3) with more throws in the discus finals.

“Shot put was pretty rough, I’m a little frustrated with that,” she said. “Discus went a lot better. In warm-ups, I actually threw 130, which got me kind of pumped. It’s a very good opportunity. I’m very happy with it. I’m going to push myself to get in the top five. I think I can do it. I’m excited for tomorrow.”
