To the Editor:
Service Learning is a way to connect the classroom to the community. Students get a chance to learn and help their community together. This helps teach kids important life lessons in a way reading from a textbook can’t.
Service Learning has helped me and my classmates build civic engagement skills while helping to improve communication skills.
Here at Richard Bernotas Middle School, we have begun to utilize service learning. My group chose NISRA. NISRA is a organization that offers summer camps for people with all types of disabilities. Students break up into small groups and plan out and supply the resources for a day at the summer camp.
It is crucial to volunteer in your community. There are numerous ways to get involved and this makes it easy to find something enjoyable as well. Not only are students helping someone else but they are also helping themselves.
People can truly make a difference and see it happening. When students become a volunteer they become the most valuable resource to their community.
When someone volunteers they feel good and experience the most rewarding thing which is seeing someone’s face light up with happiness. Our world would be much better off if more people were willing to give a little of their time to someone else. Will you be one of those people?
Or will you lie dormant whilst your community needs you? So please, donate your time.
