High school sports roundup for Friday, May 25

Marengo softball captured its 12th straight regional title and its 13th in 14 seasons with a 2-0 victory Friday over the host Rockets as the Class 3A Burlington Central Regional.

Marengo starter Riley Connell worked around five hits and three walks across seven innings to earn the shutout for the defending Class 3A state champions.

Grace Houghton singled in a run in the first inning, and Anna Walsweer's steal of home plate in the fifth inning allowed the Indians (26-4) to extend their lead 2-0. Hannah Ritter finished 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Marengo will play either Freeport or Rock Falls in the Marengo Sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Huntley 12, Hononegah 1 (5 inn.): At the Class 4A Hononegah Regional in Rockton, Sofia Tenuta homered twice as the Red Raiders went deep four times to secure their fourth consecutive regional title.

Tenuta finished with three RBIs, Autumn Kasal was 3 for 4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored, and Teagen O'Rilley launched a solo homer.

Tiffany Giese was 3 for 3 with three stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI, and Marley Reicher swiped three bags in addition to scoring once and driving in one run on two hits.

Giese tossed four innings and gave up one run on three hits while fanning three.

Huntley (31-5) will take on McHenry in the Huntley Sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

McHenry 10, Grant 1: At the Class 4A Grant Regional in Fox Lake, the Warriors repeated as regional champions behind a strong pitching performance from Ashley Dehmlow.

Dehmlow surrendered one run on five hits and four walks while striking out two. She also went 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.

Jocelyn Currie added two hits and an RBI, Lauren Schmitz was 2 for 3 and scored twice, Mannon Amelio had two hits, and Tori Boysen knocked in one run.

McHenry (14-16) will play Huntley in the Huntley Sectional semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Harlem 6, Hampshire 4: At the Class 4A Harlem Regional in Machesney Park, the Whip-Purs fell just short of a regional title.

Morgan Haefling doubled twice and scored two runs as part of a three-hit day. Miki Snider homered and knocked in a pair for Hampshire (15-13).


Class 1A state tournament: Prairie Ridge doubles pair Daniel Lamar and Patrick Nasta were knocked out of the championship bracket Friday but remain alive in the consolation bracket heading into the final day of competition Saturday.

Lamar and Nasta lost to Montini's Thomas and David Batka, 7-6 (5), 6-4, in their first match Friday. They bounced back to record  6-4, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3 wins to reach Saturday's consolation quarterfinals.

Marian Central's Ian Brzeski and Mike Dowling won their first two consolation matches Friday before being eliminated in the third match of the day.

Prairie Ridge's Devarsi Rawal and Ben Lingner went 1-1 in consolation play to finish their season.

In singles competition, Prairie Ridge's Max Kueller lost, 6-3, 6-3, to Carbondale's Jack Butler.

Class 2A state tournament: Jacobs' Kerwin Chong defeated Palatine's Casey Hishinuma, 7-6 (4), 6-1, and Highland Park's Jeremy Learner, 6-4, 2-6, (15-13), in his first two consolation matches Friday before falling to Waubonsie Valley's Anthony Nguyen, 6-3, 6-2, to finish his season.

Jacobs' doubles pair Kyle and Kevin Burton lost their first consolation match of the day to Wheaton-Warrenville South's Jack Lillig and Paul Choi, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
