Diana Kenney, Downtown Crystal Lake/Main Street executive director, has been chosen as grand marshal for the 2018 Crystal Lake Independence Day parade.

Kenney is widely regarded as an expert on Crystal Lake history. Upon moving to Crystal Lake in 1986, she took a tour of the Dole Mansion and was hooked.

She immediately began volunteering with the Dole Mansion Restoration Association and joined the Board of Directors in 1996 where she served until the association dissolved in 2000. Kenney saw a need to continue the mission of the association.

In 2000, Kenney and a small group of local history buffs organized and chartered the Crystal Lake Historical Society. Before the sale of the Dole Mansion, Kenney organized a posse of volunteers to rescue local artifacts. These saved items now are property of the Historical Society and stored at the Colonel Palmer House, which serves as the Historical Society headquarters. Kenney volunteers at every event held at the Colonel Palmer House, as well as provides leadership to all of the society’s events and activities.

In the business world, Kenney is the executive director of the Downtown Crystal Lake Association/Main Street Program, where she organizes events and provides support for business members, including the Festival of Lights Parade, Lunch with the Bunny, Johnny Appleseed Festival, Breakfast with Santa, Sidewalk Sales and more.

Kenney has spent more than 30 years in Crystal Lake not just working to preserve history but to educate citizens about our heritage in an exciting, accessible and fun manner. She has supported the business community with energy, creativity and enthusiasm, helping downtown Crystal Lake become a strong sector of the local economy.
