Golf: Lydon, Shireman among winners at RedTail Open

LAKEWOOD – After a forgettable two holes on No. 10 and 11 in regulation, Spencer Shireman made his first career playoff a memorable one at Tuesday's McHenry County Junior Golf Association’s RedTail Open.

Shireman, who will be a sophomore at Crystal Lake South in the fall, parred the 10th and sank a 10-foot birdie putt on the 11th to outlast Bayden Hubacher in a playoff and capture the boys junior division title of the MCJGA season opener.

Shireman and Hubacher, an incoming freshman at Crystal Lake Central, both finished with 82s. Shireman double bogeyed the 10th and triple bogeyed the 11th before making par on the final seven holes to force a playoff.

"I was just going for pars (in the playoff)," said Shireman, who had matching 41s on the front and back nine. "I knew I had to settle down and take my normal swings, not try extra hard or anything and blow it all up. I guess the pressure helped me a little bit, but it could have gone either way."

Crystal Lake's Kevin Craig was third with an 85 and won a tie-breaker over Huntley's Trevor Book with a lower score on the back nine. Craig was the only player to shoot at or below par on either the front or back on Tuesday, shooting a 1-under 35 on the back with a birdie on the 10th.

Shireman didn't crack the varsity team at South last year, but he is hopeful to make it as a sophomore. The Gators are coming off a Class 3A regional title and figure to return one of the deeper Fox Valley Conference teams. Shireman helped the Gators JV team go undefeated in conference play.

"Hopefully I'm on varsity, but if I'm not, I just hope we can repeat our undefeated season," Shireman said.

Marian Central's Andrew Lydon had the low score of the day with a 7-over-par 79 to win the boys senior division. The Hurricanes senior shot a 42 on the front and came in strong with a 37 on the back. Crystal Lake South's Ricky Falbo and Jack Roberts tied for second with 83s.

Lydon was playing in his first 18-hole tournament of the summer. Marian advanced to sectionals as a team last season, but graduated four seniors – including Lydon's older brother, James.

"We would always compete against each other and try to beat each other," said Lydon, who had birdies on No. 8 and 14. "It won’t happen this year obviously, so we’ll see. It’s going to be a lot different. My putting was pretty good today. My goal today was no doubles, and I didn't have any."

Crystal Lake Central sophomore Renata Petersen won the girls senior division with an 87, one stroke better than 2017 Huntley graduate Nicole Gordus, who is entering her sophomore season at St. Ambrose. Lauren Kempf of Jacobs took third with a 91.

Petersen shot a 41 on the front and 46 on the back in her win. Petersen will return as one of Crystal Lake Central co-op's top golfers in the fall, along with two-time state qualifier Molly Lyne.

"I was playing pretty well on the front, and then my nerves got the best of me on the back," Petersen said. "For the most part, I'm playing every day this summer. If I'm not competing in a tournament, I'm out there practicing."

Johnsburg's Ellie Johnson won the girls junior division with a 47 on the front nine. Madison Donovan (57) took second, and Skyhawks teammate Hailey Bullamore (78) finished third.
