New felony charges filed against alleged drunken driver

A 48-year-old Johnsburg man faces added felony charges stemming from a March crash that landed him and a woman in the hospital.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for the arrest of Guy Stedman Jr., who prosecutors said injured a 63-year-old woman in a March 26 crash in Richmond Township.

Stedman, of the 1800 block of Indian Ridge Drive, was arrested and charged with two counts of driving under the influence in connection with the crash. Charging documents claim Stedman’s blood alcohol content was above 0.08 percent.

Hospital staff said Stedman smelled like alcohol and appeared to be under the influence, according to citations filed in McHenry County court.

The female driver, of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, also was taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry, a crash report shows.

It wasn’t until Wednesday that a McHenry County grand jury indicted Stedman on felony charges of aggravated driving under the influence. McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney John Gibbons declined to say why the charges emerged more than two months after the crash.

The charges typically carry a one- to three-year penalty.

Neither Stedman nor the attorney who represents him on the related DUI charges, Edward Donahue, could be reached to comment.

Witnesses the night of the crash reported seeing Stedman driving east on Route 12, and claimed he was swerving on the road, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office citations show.

Police noted in their citations that It was raining when Stedman’s 2014 Ford Focus and the woman’s 2008 Honda Civic EX-L collided at 10:11 p.m. on Route 12 about 100 feet west of South Solon Road.

Stedman hasn’t yet been arrested on the most recent charges. He’s due back in court July 5.
