To the Editor:
On page 8 of the June 11 Northwest Herald was an ad, “Say No to Another Chicken-Dinner Fundraiser.” This is an ad for a Pioneer Center fundraiser at a McHenry County restaurant and bar. The ad promotes dinner and a cash bar with dancing.
I have volunteered for more than a decade with PADS, which is under Pioneer Center. I grew up in Chicago, in a home where alcoholism was a major problem. I had a deadbeat dad who cheated on my mother. As a child, I experienced being beaten bloody by a drunk. I was about 11 years old when I made a pledge not to drink alcohol.
As an adult, my younger brother was homeless for about the last 15 years of his life. When he was found dead, the autopsy stated the cause of death was alcohol poisoning. I will not give up on PADS or the Old Firehouse Assistance Center in Woodstock. The needs of the poor and homeless are great. I work with both on a weekly basis. Alcohol and drug addiction are major problems in our nation. I can’t support fundraisers that serve alcohol.
