2018 Northwest Herald Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year: McHenry's Jenna Pauly

McHenry’s Jenna Pauly turned in an amazing performance in the Fox Valley Conference Girls Track and Field Meet, scoring 40 points individually to help the Warriors to second place.

The last person to accomplish that was Woodstock’s Laura Valldeperas in 1997. Pauly won the 100 and 200 meters, high jump and pole vault.

She finished the season taking fourth in the Class 3A high jump (5-6) at the IHSA Girls State Meet and also was seventh in pole vault (11-0). For her efforts, Pauly was chosen as the Northwest Herald Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the sports staff.

The Warriors are happy that Pauly, a junior this season, has one more year. She answered these questions from sports writer Joe Stevenson.

Who is the most famous person you have taken a picture with?

Pauly: Nastia Luikin (2008 Olympics all-around gymnastics champion) when I was little. It was at a signing at a mall.

Who would you most like to see in concert this summer?

Pauly: I would LOVE to see AJR this summer. They are my favorite band and they are pretty unknown so tickets are pretty cheap.

What is the last really good book you read?

Pauly: “Every Day” by David Levithan. It’s about a person who wakes up every day in a different body. It’s such a good book, one that really makes you think.

What is your favorite wild animal?

Pauly: Pandas. They are so cute and I just want to cuddle with one.

What is a sport you are not good at?

Pauly: Basically any sport that requires catching or throwing a ball. I cannot throw a ball for the life of me. That’s why I stick with track.

What is something that scares you?

Pauly: Snakes! They are so gross and terrifying.

What is it like to fall backward after going 11 or 12 feet in the air?

Pauly: While vaulting everything is so fast I don’t have time to think about falling. Usually while I’m falling I’m just focusing on the bar and hoping I didn’t knock it down.

What were your favorite TV shows as a kid?

Pauly: “Arthur” and “Barney” were my favorites.

What are some good words to live by?

Pauly: “Good, better, best. Never rest until your good is your better and your better is your best.” I love this quote because it shows how you can always improve yourself to be the best you can be.

Which athlete would you most like to hang with for a day?

Pauly: I would love to hang with gymnast Simone Biles. Her passion for gymnastics is amazing, and even though I don’t do gymnastics anymore, I still look up to her as an athlete.

What would be your dream job?

Pauly: I would love to be a professional athlete or a coach for an experienced athlete. I want to keep sports as a part of my life for as long as I can.

What are three movies you can watch over and over?

Pauly: “Mean Girls”because it’s a classic. “Lilo and Stitch,” my childhood favorite, and “The Greatest Showman” because I love musicals.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Pauly: Rocky Road, Cookie Dough, Cookies and Cream, and basically every other flavor. I love ice cream!

What’s the best thing to eat on a day when you are competing?

Pauly: Peanut butter. I absolutely love peanut butter at meets. I have my own small jar and I eat it by the spoonful. I don’t have much time between events, so it’s something that is small and will give me energy.

What is the nicest gift you have ever received?

Pauly: My cross necklace I got when I was little. I wear it all the time.
